Mamata Banerjee: In a significant development, Mamata Banerjee, the Chief Minister of West Bengal and leader of the Trinamool Congress party, has announced that her party will contest next year’s election “alone with people’s support.” Political analysts believe this is a big move as it will weaken the opposition alliance, reducing 42 seats.
Mamata Banerjee slams INC
Mamata Banerjee also accused other parties such as CPM and INC of being aligned with BJP. She said, “If there are unholy alliances, how will Congress fight with BJP? How will Left fight the BJP… How are CPM and Congress claiming to be anti-BJP?”
Mamata Banerjee made this comment after INC won the recent by-election in Sardighi where the ruling TMC was in power. She also alleged that the parties played communal card and the only difference between them was “BJP has played it openly, but CPM and the Congress have played it to a greater extent”. She continued further by saying, “we should not listen to CPM or the Congress… The ones that work with BJP, we cannot ally with them.”
In a statement, she said “In 2024, we will see an alliance between Trinamool and the people. We will not go with any of the other political parties. We will fight alone with people’s support.” During the last elections, Mamata played a huge role in the alliance, however, they not only lost the election but BJP also won 18 seats out of 42 seats in West Bengal.
Mamata Banerjee as PM candidate
Since then, Ms. Banerjee has been concentrating more and more on Bengal, practically ceasing to take part in any opposition show of force.
With a crushing victory in 2021, it brought her a third term as CM and a stronger desire to go outside of the state. But few of her elections beyond the state have had unfruitful outcomes. Both in Goa and today in Tripura, the Trinamool failed to register an account. Nonetheless, the party secured five seats in Meghalaya.
