In a pivotal turn of events, Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra faced expulsion from the Lok Sabha on Friday following a heated debate on allegations related to a cash-for-question controversy. Despite the Trinamool’s plea to designate Moitra as the party’s speaker during the debate, she was denied the opportunity to address the Lok Sabha. The subsequent voting favored Moitra’s expulsion, prompting her to share a prepared statement outside the parliamentary chambers.
Denied Speaking Opportunity
During the debate in the Lok Sabha, Mahua Moitra was not granted the chance to present her perspective, despite the Trinamool’s request for her to speak on behalf of the party. This denial of speaking privileges added to the controversy surrounding Moitra’s expulsion.
Allegations of a Kangaroo Court and Lack of Evidence
Expressing her dissatisfaction with the proceedings, Mahua Moitra, after her expulsion, referred to the entire process as a “kangaroo court.” She vehemently argued that there was no concrete evidence of cash transactions or gifts associated with the allegations. Moitra highlighted that the ethics committee failed to hear Darshan Hiranandani, a crucial party involved in the case.
Expulsion Based on Login Sharing, No Clear Rules
Moitra emphasized that the recommendation for her expulsion was primarily grounded in the complaint that she shared her login credentials. However, she contested this, stating that there are no specific rules against such actions. The lack of a clear rule regarding login sharing further fueled Moitra’s defense against the expulsion decision.
