TRAI: In a major move to curb spam, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has announced stringent measures against entities involved in making spam calls and sending unapproved messages. Starting from September 1, 2024, any entity found misusing its telecom resources, such as SIP or PRI lines, for spam activities will face severe consequences.
Strict Penalties for Spam Calls
According to TRAI’s new regulations, if any entity is caught making spam calls, all its telecom resources will be disconnected by its Telecom Service Provider (TSP). Furthermore, the offending entity will be blacklisted by all TSPs for up to two years. During this period, no new telecom resources will be allocated to the blacklisted entity by any TSP. This coordinated effort by all telecom operators is aimed at significantly reducing the number of spam calls that plague users across the country.
Ban on Non-Whitelisted URLs and APKs in Messages
Effective September 1, 2024, messages containing URLs or APKs that have not been whitelisted will no longer be allowed to be delivered. This measure is designed to protect users from potential phishing attacks, malware, and other security threats often embedded in unapproved links and applications.
Ensuring Message Traceability
In addition to these measures, TRAI has mandated that all TSPs must complete the technical implementation of entity and telemarketer chain binding by October 31, 2024. This will ensure the traceability of the message flow, making it easier to identify the origin of spam messages and hold the responsible entities accountable.
These decisions by TRAI are part of a broader effort to enhance the security and reliability of telecom services in India, protecting consumers from the nuisance and potential risks associated with spam communications.
