Tripura Elections 2023: A list of 17 candidates has been released by the Congress, which will run in the next Tripura Assembly election in coalition with the CPI(M). Former BJP minister and Agartala MLA Sudip Roy Barman will run for the same seat in the upcoming elections. Earlier last week, the Left Front, which is led by the CPI(M), named candidates for 47 of the 60 Assembly seats. BJP too released names of their candidates today.
The Communist Party of India (Marxist) will run for 43 of the 47 seats, while the other Left partners—CPI, RSP, and Forward Bloc—will each field one candidate. The Left Front entered the election with 24 fresh faces.
Given that the Congress was the principal opponent of the Left Front, which controlled Tripura for 25 years before being dethroned by the BJP in 2018, the Congress-CPI(M) coalition represents a major change in the political landscape of the state.

In 2018, the BJP won 35 of the 60 seats up for grabs, the CPI(M) won 16, the Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura (IPFT) took home eight, and the Congress received a blank ballot. The senior leadership of the BJP was attempting to forge a pre-election coalition with TIPRA, a regional party founded by former Congressman and royal heir Pradyot Deb Barman, but those negotiations have since been shelved.

On Saturday, the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) too revealed the names of its candidates for 48 of the state’s 60 Assembly seats. Union Minister Pratima Bhoumik has been nominated as the party’s candidate in Dhanpur, while Tripura CM Manik Saha has been fielded from Town Bordowali.
According to Rajib Bhattacharjee, the party’s state president, who arrived in the state late Friday night from New Delhi with other top leaders, the party, which is now in control in the northeastern state, would run in the next elections alone and file nominations for all 60 seats.
