TV channels driven by agenda: Supreme Court

The Supreme Court on Friday reprimanded the television media for misusing their freedom of speech and showing things in a communal manner. The court said that the media has to learn to restrain itself, as they occupy a great position of power to shape the mind of the people. The court said that TV sensationalises the news. And people consume whatever is served to them and shape their lives accordingly. JKM Joseph said, ‘It is very dangerous.’

J Joseph said that the media should realize that they do not have the right to speak whatever is in their mind, as freedom of expression comes with responsibility. J Joseph said that the problem with independence is that it reaches the audience and the question is whether they are mature enough to understand and differentiate what is being shown in the news.

J. Joseph said, ‘If freedom is used with an agenda, then you are not really serving the people. You are serving someone else for some other reason.’ He said that the angle of money is also involved in the whole matter and then who runs the order.

Joseph said that after all everything is running on TRPs, this is the basic problem and unfortunately nothing is being done about it. He said that TV sensationalises everything and people, especially the youth, get hooked to it. He said that TV creates perceptions much faster than any other medium and programs have to be carefully differentiated.
