The official Twitter handle of the Islamic organization Popular Front of India (PFI) has been banned. Twitter has taken this action after the organization was banned by the Government of India (GOI). Twitter has written that the PFI Official (@PFIOofficial) account has been suspended in India in response to a legal demand.
The Government of India had issued an order banning PFI late on Tuesday (27 September). The Union Home Ministry has banned PFI in the country under the Unlawful Activities Act. The government had asked states across the country to take steps against PFI.
The PFI, which was banned by the Central Government, has also been banned by the Government of Kerala and Tamil Nadu. The governments of Kerala and Tamil Nadu have released the list of PFI and its affiliated organizations which have been banned under the Anti-Terrorism Act ‘UAPA’.
Organizations named in the list include PFI, its affiliates and affiliated fronts- Rehab India Foundation, Campus Front of India, All India Imams Council, National Confederation of Human Rights Organization, National Women’s Front, Junior Front, Empower India Foundation and Includes Rehab Foundation.
On September 22 and 27, raids were conducted against the PFI in several states and hundreds of its workers were arrested or detained. On September 22, law enforcement agencies, including the NIA, took action against the PFI. At the same time, on September 27, on the lead of the NIA, the police of seven states of the country conducted raids against the people associated with PFI. In these raids and in many earlier cases, there was talk of getting such evidence against the PFI, on the basis of which a ban can be imposed.
After all, late Tuesday night, the Union Home Ministry issued a notification banning the PFI. The Home Ministry notification said, “Some of the founding members of PFI are leaders of the Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI).
It has links with Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB). Both SIMI and JMB are banned organisations.
The notification further said, “There have been several cases of PFI’s links with terrorist organizations like ‘Islamic State of Iraq and Syria’ (ISIS). PFI and its allies or fronts are working in an intelligence way to increase radicalization in a community to spread the feeling of insecurity in the country. Which is corroborated by the fact that some PFI activists have joined internationally active terrorist organizations. In view of the above reasons and the activities of PFI, it is necessary to declare it and its affiliates or fronts as illegal organizations with immediate effect. In exercise of the power given in sub-section (3) of section 3 of the Anti-Terrorism Act, it is declared unlawful.
