Amid the tussle with the Indian government over the new social media rules, Twitter India MD Manish Maheshwari has been booked by the police over misrepresentation of India’s map on the company’s website.
Bajrang Dal leader registers FIR
He has been booked under Section 505 (2) of IPC and Section 74 of IT (Amendment) Act, 2008, news agency ANI reported. The FIR was registered on the complaint of a Bajrang Dal leader in Bulandsahr, the news agency said.
Twitter’s career website, Tweep Life, had shown Union Territories Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh as separate country. The distorted map that was flagged by a Twitter user evoked angry reactions and demand for action, the map, however, stands corrected now.
Twitter has now removed the wrong map
However, after drawing flak over displaying a distorted map of India that showed Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh as separate country, Twitter has now removed the wrong map.
This is not the first time when Twitter has misrepresented India’s map. Earlier in October 2020, it had shown Leh as part of China.
The UP Police had earlier summoned Maheshwari for questioning in connection with an allegedly misleading video of an elderly Muslim man being assaulted in the Loni area of Ghaziabad district.
The firm was also issued a second notice by Ghaziabad police to seek “account details” of the suspects accused by the police of posting and promoting the video.
