For counterterrorism operations and specialised operations in the Eastern Ladakh region, two units of the Indian Air Force’s Garud Special Forces have been deployed in the Kashmir valley.

Multiple exercises for counterterrorism operations were conducted in the Kashmir valley by Garud special forces. The Garud Special Forces of the IAF, who are highly trained to execute operations in steep terrain and urban terrain, were initially stationed in the valley in 2007 and 2209 and redeployed in 2017, according to an exclusive interview with the commanding officer of a Garud unit with ANI.

According to him, the military were also there during the Doklam or border dispute between China and India in 2017.

Doklam is an area between China, Bhutan, and India. The Doklam plateau problem gained attention in 2017 when Chinese troops operating with construction vehicles and road-building equipment started extending an existing road in Doklam southward under the direction of the CCP.

Speaking to ANI, a commander of the Garud Special Force said, “Garud Forces have undertaken various operations in the valley and they have also achieved a lot of success by eliminating a number of terrorists. At present, there are two teams that are deployed here along with the Indian Army.”

“The Special Forces commander recalled that the special forces were deployed in the valley in 2007 and 2009. “Thereafter, they were redeployed in 2017,” he said.
“We have got much success due to our rigorous training. We have also lost three Garuds in these operations also,” he said.

The commander noted that the special forces had received four Gallantry awards, five Shaurya Chakras, and one Ashok Chakra.

“The forces are also conducting operations in hilly areas and Urban terrain. We have also been deployed in higher reaches as well,” he said.
