UN says 98 % likelihood that 2023-2027 will set warmest five-year period record, El Niño suspected

UN says 98 % likelihood that 2023-2027 will set warmest five-year period record, El Niño suspected

The United Nations (UN) warned that there is a 98 percent chance that 2023-2027 will be the warmest five years of all time, setting up a new record. In a statement that the World Meteorological Organisation also noted that there is a 98 percent probability that at least one of the next five years will be the warmest ever.

2023-2027 Will Be Warmest Five-Year Period Ever

The UN noted that there is a 98 percent chance that at least one of the next five years will be the warmest ever on record.

“There is a 98-percent likelihood that at least one of the next five years, and the five-year period as a whole, will be the warmest on record,” the WMO said.

There is a 66 percent probability that the annual average near-surface global temperature between 2023 and 2027 will be more than 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels for at least one year, the UN noted.

El Niño to rise in 2023

The UN further added that there is a 98 per cent chance that at least one of the five years will beat the temperature record set in 2016 when there was an exceptionally strong El Niño.

There is a 66 per cent chance of El Niño occurring from May to July 2023, with global temperature rising in 2024. It is because El Niño causes global temperatures to increase in the year after it develops.

, “WMO is sounding the alarm that we will breach the 1.5C level on a temporary basis with increasing frequency”, said the agency’s chief Petteri Taalas.

“A warming El Nino is expected to develop in the coming months and this will combine with human-induced climate change to push global temperatures into uncharted territory.

“This will have far-reaching repercussions for health, food security, water management and the environment. We need to be prepared.”
