PM Modi pushes for Uniform Civil Code, igniting political debate ahead of elections
PM Modi argued forcefully on Tuesday for the adoption of uniform legislation for members of all communities, alleging that Muslims are being incited over the delicate subject. With less than a year until the Lok Sabha elections, Prime Minister Modi spoke on a topic closely associated with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and argued that even the Supreme Court had supported a UCC, but those engaging in vote-bank politics were against to it. He also questioned how the nation could have two systems. As elections in numerous states are approaching, PM Modi’s remarks sparked a national discussion as several opposition leaders accused him of bringing up the UCC issue for political reasons. PM Modi is accused by Congress politicians of using the UCC issue as a distraction from more pressing issues like inflation, unemployment, and the state of Manipur. With the Uniform Civil Code, personal laws based on religion, customs, and traditions would be replaced with a single common law that would apply to everyone, regardless of religion, caste, creed, sexual orientation, or gender.
