A significant move in improving India’s manufacturing sector was taken when the Union Cabinet decided to sanction the creation of 12 new industrial smart cities spread among different states. The initiative, which has a huge investment of ₹28,602 crore, is an important step towards realising the vision of a ‘Viksit Bharat’ and intends to change the industrial landscape of the nation. During a media event, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw revealed these details and emphasised the project’s potential to spur investment and generate millions of jobs.

Strategic Locations and Development Plan

With two in Andhra Pradesh and one in Bihar, the recently approved industrial smart cities would be thoughtfully dispersed over multiple states. As stated in the most recent Budget, the government is working with state governments and the business sector to create “plug and play” industrial parks in or close to 100 cities. This project is a part of this larger strategy. By giving companies access to ready-to-use infrastructure, these parks aim to increase domestic production.

Built on PM GatiShakti Principles

These industrial cities will be built with a strong emphasis on sustainable infrastructure, adhering to the PM GatiShakti ideals. ‘Plug-n-play’ and ‘walk-to-work’ principles will be included into the projects to guarantee planned urbanisation that maintains a balance with regional growth. The goal is to connect key cities and spur economic growth throughout the Golden Quadrilateral by building a “grand necklace” of industrial clusters.

Massive Employment and Investment Potential

Twelve industrial smart cities, with an anticipated investment of ₹1.5 lakh crore, have great potential for economic growth. It is projected that these developments will result in up to 30 lakh indirect jobs and 10 lakh direct jobs. It is anticipated that the establishment of these cities will significantly boost the manufacturing sector’s GDP contribution to the country, thereby securing India’s place in global value chains.

Ongoing and Future Developments

The government has already made progress with eight industrial cities in various stages of development. Trunk infrastructure, including road connectivity, water, and power supply, has been established in cities like Dholera (Gujarat), Auric (Maharashtra), Vikram Udyogpuri (Madhya Pradesh), and Krishnapatnam (Andhra Pradesh). With the addition of these 12 new cities, the total number of industrial smart cities in the country will reach 20, significantly expanding India’s industrial network and ensuring that the nation remains a competitive destination for global investments.
