Union Sports Minister Anurag Thakur has declared that bilateral cricket matches between India and Pakistan will remain on hold until Pakistan ceases its support for terrorist activities. This statement comes in the wake of an ongoing encounter in the Anantnag district of Jammu and Kashmir, resulting in the tragic loss of four security personnel.
Thakur emphasized the long-standing decision of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to abstain from engaging in bilateral cricket matches with Pakistan unless they halt terrorism, cross-border attacks, and infiltration. He stated, “I believe the sentiments of our nation and its citizens align with this stance.”
However, the opposition quickly responded to Thakur’s statement. Priyanka Chaturvedi, a Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) Member of Parliament, questioned the status of the upcoming World Cup match between India and Pakistan, scheduled to be held at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on October 14. She sought clarification on whether this match would be considered bilateral and if it would be canceled in consideration of the nation’s sentiments.
The loss of four security personnel, including Colonel Manpreet Singh, Major Ashish Dhonchak, and Deputy Superintendent of Jammu and Kashmir Police Humayun Bhat, in the encounter with terrorists in the Kokernag area of South Kashmir has deeply saddened the nation. Another soldier, who was part of the counter-terrorism operation, also lost his life subsequently.
