Manipur Violence: According to the home ministry on Wednesday, Union Home Minister Amit Shah has scheduled an all-party conference for this coming Saturday to review the situation in violently disturbed Manipur. Shah paid a visit to the state last month and spoke with representatives of the Meitei and Kuki groups multiple times in an effort to stop the cycle of violence that has resulted in 115 fatalities and at least 40,000 displaced people.

Amit Shah Calls All-Party Meeting to Address Manipur Crisis

The ministry of home affairs Tweeted, “Union Home Minister Shri @AmitShah has convened an all party meeting on 24th June at 3 PM in New Delhi to discuss the situation in Manipur.” After ethnic Kuki organisations organised for protests against a court-proposed change to the state’s reservation matrix that would have given scheduled tribe (ST) status to the majority Meitei community, fighting initially broke out on May 3 in Churachandpur town. Tens of thousands of people were forced to flee burning houses and neighbourhoods into jungles, frequently crossing state borders, as violence soon overtook the state whose ethnic fault lines run deep.

Government Implements Curfew and Internet Shutdown in Manipur

The government imposed a curfew, shut off the internet, and deployed more security personnel to try to stop the escalating fighting. The state’s internet is still not fully operational. As it assumed control of the investigation into the ethnic violence in Manipur on June 9, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) re-registered six First Information Reports (FIRs) and formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to look into the criminal conspiracy behind the riots. The MHA also established a three-person Commission of Inquiry, headed by former Chief Justice of Gauhati High Court Ajai Lamba, to investigate the reasons for the violence, the progression of events leading up to it, and any failures or neglect on the part of public officials. The panel, which also includes retired members Himanshu Shekhar Das and Aloka Prabhakar of the Indian Police Service (IPS), has been instructed to present its findings no later than six months.
