A chaotic scene unfolded during the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) meeting focused on the Waqf (Amendment) Bill 2024. TMC MP Kalyan Banerjee became embroiled in a heated exchange with BJP’s Abhijit Gangopadhyay. In the midst of their argument, Banerjee smashed a glass water bottle in frustration, injuring himself in the process.

The meeting, which took place on Tuesday, turned chaotic when Kalyan Banerjee clashed with BJP’s Abhijit Gangopadhyay. During the argument, Banerjee became frustrated and picked up a glass water bottle. In a fit of anger, he slammed it down on the table, causing it to break.

As a result of the incident, Kalyan Banerjee hurt his thumb and index finger. He required first aid after the injury. TMC members quickly rushed to help him. Notably, AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi and AAP leader Sanjay Singh escorted him back to the meeting room.

Due to the scuffle, the JPC meeting was temporarily halted. Before the meeting resumed, officials offered Banerjee some soup to help him recover from the situation.

Opposition’s Concerns About the Waqf Bill

Critics, including members of the India Alliance such as TMC, AIMIM, and Congress, have raised concerns that the Waqf (Amendment) Bill 2024 might unfairly affect the Muslim community. They questioned the government’s reasons for advancing the bill and suggested that the process of consulting on it was not sufficient and seemed politically driven.
