The Kashmir Valley is gearing up to host the G20 meeting next month and work is on in full swing to beautify the venue. In the year 2020, the work on the smart city project started to give a new look to Srinagar is also going on fast.
Srinagar is going to be the main venue of this meeting
According to sources, the Kashmir Valley will host the G20 meeting on international tourism between May 22-25, with Srinagar being the main venue for the meetings. Though tight security arrangements are being made for the high-profile event with special forces and anti-drone technology, the main venue has not been announced due to security reasons.
‘Pending projects will be completed on time’
According to Chief Secretary Arun Kumar, all arrangements are being made and all pending projects related to the G20 meeting will be completed on time. “There will be a festive atmosphere in Srinagar after all the projects to beautify the city are completed,” Kumar said.
Sources have confirmed that representatives of all G20 countries except China will attend the working group meeting on tourism in Srinagar on May 23. The G20 representatives will reach Srinagar on May 22 and the meeting will be held on May 23. On May 24, the delegates will be taken on a tour of major tourist places.
Delegations from other countries will be given a tour of the valley which includes Dal Lake, Shikara ride, Dachigam Wildlife Sanctuary and ski resort of Gulmarg. The delegates are then scheduled to return to New Delhi on May 25, though the exact itinerary has been kept secret for security reasons.
‘Smart city project will be completed on time’
Regarding this, Amir Athar, Commissioner of Srinagar Municipal Corporation and CEO of Smart City Project, says, “G-20 is going to be an important event for the tourism sector in Jammu and Kashmir. This event will promote Kashmir as a tourist destination globally. We want to make this event a success and also make the city more attractive.”
On one hand, Union Home Minister Amit Shah held a review meeting on the security situation in Jammu and Kashmir and also discussed preparations for the G20 summit in the state. On the other hand, security forces are also keeping a close watch at the local level because Pakistan has already made a fuss about it. He is opposing making Kashmir the venue of the G20 meeting. The meeting was also attended by Director General of Police (DGP) Dilbag Singh and Chief Secretary Arun Kumar Mehta.
