Uniform Civil Code: In the current dispute over the Uniform Civil Code (UCC), Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami on Friday unleashed a stinging attack on AIMIM leader Asaduddin Owaisi. A day after the president of AIMIM questioned Prime Minister Narendra Modi over lowering the budget for minority welfare by 40%, the state minister claimed that individuals like Owaisi advance Jinnah-type culture.
PM Modi’s Call for UCC Sparks Controversy
“People like Owaisi push forward Jinnah-type culture. Under the leadership of PM Modi, the country has been moving forward. India is being recognised worldwide,” the Uttarakhand CM was quoted as saying by ANI. After PM Modi argued forcefully for UCC, claiming that the nation cannot function under two sets of laws, a fight broke out. Asaduddin Owaisi had criticised Prime Minister Modi for supporting a uniform civil code, saying he wanted to discriminate against Muslims and enact a “Hindu Civil Code.” He also criticised the Prime Minister for his comments on Pasmanda Muslims and Triple Talaq in Madhya Pradesh. The Hyderabad MP asserted on Thursday that all Muslims are poor based on a media story. Additionally, he noted that Hindus, who fall under the Other Backward Classes (OBC) categorization, are poorer than Muslims, who are upper class.
Qwaisi Questions Opposition to Reservations for Underprivileged Muslims
He also questioned why the BJP, which is in power, is against reservations for underprivileged Muslims. Owaisi wrote on Twitter, “PM @narendramodi said that a “group” among Muslims doesn’t let Pasmanda Muslims progress. But the truth is that ALL Muslims are poor & UC Muslims are poorer than OBC Hindus. He’s the PM of all Indians, then why has he cut Minority Welfare budget by 40%?” “Why is his govt opposed to SC reservations for Dalit Muslims? Why is BJP opposed to reservations for backward Muslims? Will he blame this social injustice also on lack of UCC?,” his tweet read. The AIMIM chairman responded after PM Modi criticised the “vote bank” and “appeasement” policies of the opposition parties. According to PM Modi, people were agitated in the name of the UCC. “These individuals (the opposition) make accusations against us, but in actuality, their chants are Musalman, Musalman. Muslim families wouldn’t have lagged behind in terms of education and employment, according to PM Modi, if they had actually been working in the interests of Muslims. According to Modi, vote-bank politics prevent Pasmanda Muslims from even receiving equal treatment. One of the BJP’s main platforms is the UCC, and some of its state administrations have pushed for its implementation. A UCC is designed to provide all residents, regardless of their religious affiliations, with a common set of rules governing private issues such as marriage, divorce, inheritance, and adoption.
