Uttarakhand govt may call off ongoing Kumbh, 2 Akharas pull back out amid covid surge

The BJP-led Uttarakhand government may call off the Kumbh Mela Akhara Parishad, the top body of seers decides to conclude the mega event.

Chief Minister Tirath Singh Rawat has imposed a night curfew in the entire state and today CM also held a meeting to take the stock of the COVID situation.

Besides Niranjani Akhara, Anand Akhara has also joined in to conclude the Kumbh on April 17.

Secretary of Niranjani Akhara, Ravindra Puri, said, “Due to the growing number of Covid cases, Haridwar is not in good shape. Seers associated with the Akhara have been advised to leave for their destinations on Saturday, April 17, after taking snan (in Ganga River)”. Puri also appealed to other Akharas to curtail the Kumbh Mela for seers.

In just two days more than 1000 devotees test positive for the virus and the nation has reported more than 2 lakhs and 18 thousand new cases of COVID-19 in a single day.
