Uttarakhand UCC committee mulls proposals to regulate live-ins also

The BJP government had constituted a committee of experts regarding the Uniform Civil Code in Uttarakhand. The tenure of this committee has been extended for another 6 months. As per reports the committee has received over 2.5 lakh suggestions on UCC. Some of these are being told very important.

The tenure of the committee headed by retired Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai will now be till May 27, 2023. This committee was constituted by Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami in May this year. He had promised the UCC on his return to power during the assembly elections. According to report, the committee has also received suggestions from people regarding marriage, divorce, live-in relationship, number of children.

So far 30 meetings of the 5-member expert committee have been held across the state. Its purpose was to take suggestions from the people. A website has also been created for this. However, there is still skepticism among Muslims about the Uniform Civil Code. They believe that the Uniform Civil Code is aimed at targeting them. The committee is also constantly trying to clear their apprehensions.

The committee has tried to understand their problems by meeting people and leaders of different communities. The committee had recently held a meeting with the Muslims at Piran Kaliyar. On the other hand, separate meetings were held with the people of the Sikh community at Nanakmata in Udham Singh Nagar, while with the Christian community at Nainital and with the Akhara Parishad at Haridwar.

According to the report, on the advice of the common people, the committee has also given some suggestions in its report. These suggestions are related to gender equality, age of marriage of women, share of daughters in ancestral properties, legal rights of LGBTQ couples and live in relationship.
