Amit Malviya: Rameshwar, a vegetable vendor whose viral video won over hearts on social media, is the subject of a fresh uproar after BJP‘s Amit Malviya uploaded a clip of a recent interview in which Rameshwar claimed to have received free cylinders through PM Modi’s programme. Malviya tweeted, “Rameshwar ji got a free petrol cylinder from the Modi government under the Ujjwala Yojana…but amidst all this, only Rahul Gandhi exploited his poverty for his political gains,” drawing criticism because it was only a portion of the conversation.
Rameshwar’s Tearful Account Draws Attention, Garners Political Interest
Rameshwar, a vegetable vendor, sobbed in front of the camera as he described his struggles as a result of the soaring prices of veggies. Rahul Gandhi, the leader of the Congress, and numerous other party officials shared the video when it became popular online. After paying a visit to the Azadpur Mandi, Rahul Gandhi met Rameshwar at his home in Delhi on Monday and hosted a lunch there. “Rameshwar ji is a lively person! One can see the innate nature of crores of Indians in them. Those who move ahead with a smile even in adverse circumstances are truly ‘Bharat Bhagya Vidhaata’,” Rahul Gandhi tweeted after meeting Rameshwar.
Rameshwar’s Perspective Amidst Political Controversy
An additional interview with Rahul Gandhi appeared as the BJP intensified its criticism of him for politicising Rameshwar’s situation. Rameshwar was questioned by the BBC about his opinion of Rahul Gandhi using him as a political pawn. “No, he (Rahul Gandhi) can never do that. He can never do that with anyone,” Rameshwar said. Rameshwar was questioned about whether or not he benefited from any federal or state government programmes. Rameshwar said that although his children attend government schools for free and he gets free gas cylinders, he still has to pay electricity and water bills since he is a tenant. When asked if he would like to meet Prime Minister Modi, Rameshwar responded, “I have no problems meeting with anyone.” When questioned whether he believed PM Modi done little for the poor, Rameshwar replied that he couldn’t speak for everyone. “Perhaps a few people benefited. I haven’t, though. In the interview, he said, “What can I say?”
