Weather Update : IMD Forecasts Above Normal Temperatures and Increased Heat Wave Days for May

Weather Update

Weather Update: Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, the chief of the India Meteorological Department (IMD), has announced today that above normal maximum temperatures are expected over most parts of the country in May. Additionally, a significantly high number of heat wave days are anticipated over the northern plains, central region, and adjoining areas of peninsular India.

IMD Forecasts Above Normal Temperatures and Increased Heat Wave Days for May

During a press conference, Mohapatra highlighted that a prolonged and intense spell of heat wave had affected swathes of east, northeast, and southern peninsular India in April. This situation prompted health warnings from government agencies, leading some states to suspend in-person classes in schools.

Mohapatra explained that the occurrence of five active Western Disturbances in April resulted in rain, thunderstorm, and hailstorms over north and central India at regular intervals, which prevented the occurrence of heat waves. These disturbances, according to the IMD’s director general, contributed to maintaining relatively cooler temperatures in certain regions.

Data from the IMD reveals that the heat waves experienced in April this year were more severe compared to the same period in 2023, which was previously recorded as the warmest year on record.

Mohapatra predicts around eight to 11 heat wave days over south Rajasthan

Looking ahead to May, Mohapatra predicts around eight to 11 heat wave days over south Rajasthan, west Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, Marathwada, and Gujarat regions. Additionally, he forecasts five to seven heat wave days in the remaining parts of Rajasthan, east Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, and some parts of Chhattisgarh, interior Odisha, Gangetic West Bengal, Jharkhand, Bihar, north interior Karnataka, and Telangana.

Typically, the northern plains, central India, and adjoining areas of peninsular India experience around three days of heat waves in May.
