Weather Update

Weather Update: The decline in the quality of the air above the Indo-Gangetic plain can be ascribed to vehicle emissions and stubble burning incidents that have occurred in Punjab and other surrounding states, as well as to Delhi. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected in isolated locations over coastal regions of Andhra Pradesh, Rayalaseema, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal; some areas over interior Tamil Nadu, Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Kerala, and Mahe are also likely to see heavy to very heavy rainfall. Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam, Rayalaseema, Kerala, and Mahe are expected to experience isolated thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds (between 30 and 40 kmph). There is also a good chance of isolated thunderstorms with lightning across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal.

Pollution on the peak, schools closed till Nov 18

In an attempt to combat the city’s persistent pollution following the Diwali holiday, the Delhi government initiated the ‘Diya Jalao, Patakhe Nahi’ campaign. The Delhi administration has decided to close schools until November 18 due to the increasing levels of pollution. On November 7, the Supreme Court gave the state governments an order to put an end to stubble burning and to fix the Delhi smog tower. In order to reduce pollution, the city has even called for the implementation of GRAP Stage IV.

The last two weeks had seen “severe” air quality in the nation’s capital, but on November 10th, mild rains caused the situation to improve. On the eve of Diwali, the air quality this morning was at its finest in eight years. The reprieve from the poisonous smog was only temporary, though. On Diwali night, Delhi’s pollution levels skyrocketed despite a ban on the manufacture, sale, storage, and popping of crackers.
