Following Amnesty India’s request for the ban to be lifted, the Congress-led government in Karnataka announced that it would investigate the ban on the hijab at educational institutions.
Amnesty India urged the Karnataka government to take three quick actions for human rights on Tuesday in a series of tweets, including the immediate lifting of the prohibition on women wearing hijabs in educational institutions.
Karnataka minister and prominent Congress politician G Parameshwara stated that the government “will see to it in the future” on the lifting of the hijab ban that is now in place.
“We will see in future what best we can do. Right now, we have to fulfil the five guarantees we made to the people of Karnataka,” Parameshwara.
Minister Priyank Kharge reiterated the government’s position, stating that the matter is one of policy and that the government will look into legal options to address it.
After the BJP-led state government issued an order stating that uniforms were required in schools and colleges and that there must be no exceptions for the wearing of the hijab, the hijab controversy broke out in Karnataka. The Karnataka High Court affirmed the same.
Muslim students later appealed the Supreme Court’s decision against the injunction and ceased attending classes until the outcome was known. The Supreme Court is now hearing the case.
The hijab ban has been dubbed “unconstitutional” by Congress MLA NA Haris, who also emphasised the significance of each person’s right to choose what to wear.
“The government can’t interfere in personal freedom. If the BJP did that, then it is unconstitutional. We are here to uphold the Constitution,” Haris said.
