Women’s Day: Group Captain Shaliza Dhami has been chosen by the Indian Air Force to lead a frontline combat unit in the Western sector, breaking barriers for women in the military. This is the first instance in the history of the IAF where a female officer has been appointed to command a frontline combat unit, specifically a missile squadron in the Western sector.

Who is Shaliza Dhami?
Beginning this month, the Army has initiated its inaugural deployment of female officers in leadership positions, with the exclusion of medical roles. Almost 50 women officers will lead units in frontline and active zones within both the Northern and Eastern Commands.
Group Captain Dhami, a skilled helicopter pilot with more than 2,800 flight hours, was commissioned in 2003. She has served as a Flight Commander for a Helicopter Unit in the Western sector and is also a certified Flying Instructor.
Dhami made history in 2019 when she became the first woman IAF officer to be appointed as the Flight Commander of a flying unit. With more than 15 years of experience, she has numerous notable accomplishments to her name. Born in Ludhiana, Punjab, she accomplished her first solo flight in a HAL HPT-32 Deepak in 2003.
Shaliza’s illustrious career
Dhami joined the IAF as a flying officer in 2003 and received promotions to flight lieutenant in 2005 and squadron leader in 2009. A Group Captain in the Indian Air Force is equivalent to a Colonel in the Army. Shaliza is presently working in the Operations division at the headquarters of a well-known Command unit and has twice gotten commendations from the Air Commander Commanding-in-Chief.
