Wrestlers Protest: After a five-hour meeting today, union minister Anurag Thakur gave the protesting wrestlers a written proposal. By June 15, the inquiry into the head of the wrestling organisation would be concluded, but there was no information on his arrest. The minister assured the wrestlers that the government had supported them from the beginning of their agitation, when they initially sat in protest on January 18, and that the majority of their demands had been met. According to information, the minister underlined the demands that the home minister had made known to the wrestlers during their meeting. On Wednesday, wrestlers Bajrang Punia and Sakshi Malik as well as the head of the farmer movement Rakesh Tikait arrived at the residence of Union Sports Minister Anurag Thakur for a truce meeting. The wrestlers have been invited to “fresh talks” by the sports minister. Days have passed since the wrestlers visited Home Minister Amit Shah at his New Delhi home.
Wrestlers Continue Protest, Demand Arrest of WFI Chief
The meeting, however, was deemed “inconclusive” by the wrestlers. Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh is the target of protests from wrestlers who claim he sexually harassed female competitors, including a minor. Brij Bhushan has been charged with two separate felonies under the Pocso Act thus far. ‘Wrestlers are not ending their protest and are waiting to see what the government has to offer,’ according to Sakshi Malik, hours after Union Sports Minister Anurag Thakur extended another invitation for talks on Wednesday. “Our protest is not coming to an end. We’ll wait to see what the government has in store for us.” Wrestler Sakshi Malik stated, “Our main demand is the arrest of Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief Brij Bhushan.”
