Wrestler’s Protest: The Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) will not be engaged in any activities until an Oversight Committee is properly constituted and assumes control of the WFI’s daily operations, according to the national government. This covers the suspension of any ongoing ranking contests as well as the reimbursement of any entrance money gathered from participants for any ongoing events.
Sports Ministry suspended all WFI activities
The Union government issued an order suspending all operations, which forced the cancellation of the Wrestling Federation of India’s emergency general council meeting set for today in Gonda. Additionally, the government suspended Vinod Tomar, the federation’s assistant secretary.
The unprecedented uprising against the organisation was supposed to be addressed by BJP MP Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, who was requested to resign as president of the WFI after claims of “sexual abuse and mental torment” by prominent wrestlers.
Earlier, Union Sports Minister Anurag Thakur remarked, “sexual misconduct, financial irregularities and administrative lapses and to undertake the day-to-day administration of the WFI”. He also said, “WFI president will step aside from the day-to-day functioning and has assured to cooperate in the investigation.”
Brij Bhushan continues to work
As he opened the Open National Senior Ranking Tournament in his birthplace of Gonda on Saturday, Singh carried on as normal. The sports ministry did not like Singh’s attendance at the event and on Saturday night they issued a new instruction to declare the competition to be cancelled.
A protest was held on Thursday at Jantar Mantar by Indian wrestlers, including medal winners from the Commonwealth Games the previous year. Deepender Singh Hooda, a congressman from the party, urged on Thursday that WFI be the subject of a CBI investigation under the supervision of the Supreme Court.
