Wrestlers’ protest: Farmers and khap panchayats of various states and wrestlers protesting at Jantar Mantar, have announced to hold a ‘mahila samman mahapanchayat’ near the Parliament building on Sunday. Tight security has been put in place at the Tikri border as khap panchayat leaders and farmers are joining the protesting wrestlers’ march towards the new Parliament House in Delhi today.
The wrestlers’ protesting at Jantar Mantar are demanding action against BJP MP and Wrestling Federation of India chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh. They have called a mahapanchayat outside the new Parliament building on Sunday. In the morning Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the new Parliament building.
3-km away from Parliament
The protesting site at Jantar Mantar is about 3 km from the Parliament complex. The wrestlers have been staging a sit-in protest there since April 23.
“We will not allow anything to disrupt the inauguration of the new Parliament building. The entire Delhi Police is on its toes to make sure the inauguration ceremony is conducted smoothly,” Delhi Police Special CP Deepender Pathak told reporters.
One of the protesters travelling from Sonipat in Haryana, said “We will do whatever we can in a peaceful manner to reach the ‘Mahila Samman Mahapanchayat’ called by wrestlers.”
‘Mahila Mahapanchayat at any cost’
The wrestlers said that they will go ahead with their “Mahila Mahapanchayat” near the new building at any cost. Delhi Police has put up barricades at Maulana Azad Road, ITO road and other border areas.
Police have set up stone barricades and cordoned off the borders leading to the city to prevent the farmers from Punjab and Haryana from entering the capital for the panchayat.
“We respect our athletes but we will not let there be any disturbance in the inauguration (of new Parliament building),”Devendra Pathak, Special CP, Law & Order, Delhi Police told reporters.
‘Delhi police is ready’
“Delhi police are prepared for such situations. We have enough force to deploy. Last time the border was closed for months because of the protesters (farmers’ protests). We have prepared our forces so that such situations don’t arise again. We will convince the protesters to return,” DCP East Delhi Amrutha Gugulot said.
Section 144 has been imposed at Ghazipur border and police have requested the protesters not to violate the laws or else strict action would be taken.
Tikait warns police
Meanwhile, BKU leader Rakesh Tikait warned police not to harass the farmers. “We are definitely going to go. If we are not allowed to march, then we will sit here itself (in Muzaffarnagar). Farmers will reach Delhi borders not by tractors but by vehicles,” he said.
According to the traffic advisory, only public transport vehicles, civil service aspirants, bonafide residents, labelled vehicles and emergency vehicles will be allowed to move in the New Delhi area.
Police have requested the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) to allow MC Primary Girls School, Kanjhawala Chowk in Old Bawana to be used as a temporary jail on Sunday, if needed.
