Yamuna water level: The Yamuna River in Delhi breached the 45-year-old level and is currently hovering at 207.81 metres on Wednesday. The water level is likely to rise further, triggering a flood-like situation in the national capital.
CM Kejriwal urges everyone to be safe
Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal urged those living in low-lying areas to vacate their homes. “I urge everyone living in low-lying areas to evacuate. Because the water level will rise suddenly and your life could be in danger,” Kejriwal said at a press conference.
The Delhi CM also asked the Centre to direct the Haryana government to limit the speed with which the water from the Hathinikund barrage. In a letter to Union home minister Amit Shah, the Delhi CM said the water level in Yamuna was rising despite “no rains in Delhi” in the last two days and pointed to “abnormally high volumes of water being released by Haryana at Hathnikund barrage”.
Flood-like situation in Delhi
The water from the swollen river has now entered the roads disrupting the lives of the localities who are now shifting to safer locations. Water entered the Monastery market near Kashmere Gate and Ring Road on Wednesday.
Monitoring the situation: Water Minister
Delhi’s water minister Saurabh Bhardwaj said that the government is monitoring the situation and is prepared to deal with the calamity. “We are monitoring the situation and all possible steps are being taken,” he said.
In Delhi, the highest flood level record is 207.49 meters set in 1978. However, on Wednesday, the water level in Yamuna breached an all-time mark, swelling to 207.55 meters.
