The recent visit by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Russia has provoked controversy, especially in light of his meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in the middle of the current hostilities with Ukraine. President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy voiced his deep sadness, calling the meeting a setback to efforts towards peace.
PM Modi’s Diplomatic Engagement in Russia
During his two-day visit, PM Modi engaged in informal talks with President Putin at his official residence outside Moscow. This visit marked PM Modi’s first trip to Russia since the conflict between Russia and Ukraine escalated in 2022.
Zelenskyy’s Criticism
Zelenskyy, who had previously met Prime Minister Modi at the G7 conference, expressed disapproval of the warm connection that Putin and PM Modi had during their encounter. In the wake of Russia’s recent military activities, which included a missile strike on a children’s hospital in Kyiv, he criticised Prime Minister Modi’s gesture of meeting Putin.
PM Modi’s Diplomatic Stance
According to media reports, PM Modi emphasized dialogue and diplomacy as essential for resolving the Ukraine crisis, stressing that military solutions only exacerbate the conflict. Ahead of their talks, the United States urged India to advocate for Ukraine’s sovereignty and uphold international law principles.
Escalation of Violence in Ukraine
The day of PM Modi’s arrival, Russia launched massive missile attacks across Ukraine, striking several cities and resulting in a great deal of destruction. This includes a terrible attack that brought attention to the ongoing conflict by targeting a children’s hospital in Kyiv.
