Petrol Pump Scams: The cost of petrol and diesel is always rising. Everyone is concerned about rising fuel costs, and while there is little anyone can do about it, you can save some money by avoiding the daily scams that take place at petrol stations. Customers are taken advantage of and do not receive full gas at the gas station.
Here are some tips to help you avoid falling for petrol pump scams, which are becoming more frequent.
5 Types of Petrol Pump Scams that you must be aware of
1. Check the Meter
Prior to the attendant beginning the fuel fill, make sure the metre is always reset to 0. While your car is getting refuelled, always keep an eye on the metre. While you are inside the car, the attendant might attempt to obstruct your view of the metre. It is recommended that you exit the vehicle and make sure the metre has been reset.
2. Short-fuelling
Customers can occasionally fall victim to short fuelling at petrol stations. Pumps that fill up cars with less “by mistake” are frequently used to defraud customers.
3. Quantity test
Request a measurement test if you are unsure about the amount. The Weights and Measures Department often supplies a 5-liter jar for use with petrol pumps. You can report the pump to the police if the can fills up less than the specified quantity after using this to fill it yourself.
4. Filter paper test
The Consumer Protection Act of 1986 mandates that gas stations maintain a supply of filter papers on hand. The petrol station cannot refuse a customer’s request for a filter paper test to determine if the fuel is tainted or not.
To ensure that the petrol is pure, all you need to do is place a few drips on the filter paper and watch to see if they evaporate without leaving any stains. It is a sign that the petrol is tainted if some stains remain after the fuel evaporates. This is a technique that you can avoid being duped.
5. Refuel at a reputed petrol pump
Unless you absolutely need to fill up, it is usually a good idea to refill at a reputable petrol station close to your home and place of business. Once payment has been received, request a printed copy of the bill. Using credit and debit cards exclusively is advised for payments.
