The grand statue of Netaji Subhas Chandra, which will be installed at the iconic India Gate in New Delhi, will be carved by Sculptor Adwaita Gadanayak, the Director-General of the National Gallery of Modern Art (NGMA) under the Ministry of Culture.
Adwaita Gadanayak was born and brought up in Neulapoi village of Dhenkanal district in Odisha.
Gadanayak pursued art education from BK College of Arts and Crafts and completed his masters from Delhi Art College.
Gadanayak also studies art at Slade School of Fine Arts in London. The celebrated sculptor received many awards: National Lalit Kala Akademi Award in 1993; Odisha Lalit Kala Akademi Award in 1999 etc.
Gadanayak’s prominent sculptures include the sculpture of the Father of the Nation at Rajghat, a black marble replica of Mahatma Gandhi’s salt march and many more, including his installations in London.

Notably, the Odisha sculptor will be collaborating with granite artisans of Karnataka. A total of 25 to 30 sculptors would be selected by the Ministry of Culture for the work that will begin soon in New Delhi.
The statue will be prepared using both traditional and modern (CNC sculpting) tools. The statue will be completed within the next eight months and installed at India Gate on August 15 this year marking the 75th Independence Day, he said.
As per reports, the statue will be installed under a canopy, which used to have a statue of King George V that was removed in 1968. Until the statue is completed, a hologram statue of Subash Chandra Bose would be present at the same place. The hologram will supposedly be 28 feet long and six feet wide.
