Amebic Meningoencephalitis— In response to recent reports of Amebic Meningoencephalitis in Kerala, Health Minister Veena George has provided an update on the state’s efforts to address and study this rare disease. Speaking at a press briefing, she emphasized the rarity and non-contagious nature of the condition, noting the challenges in treatment due to the lack of specific medication.
“In recent times, a few Amebic Meningoencephalitis cases were reported in Kerala. As we all know, this is a very rare disease and is not a contagious disease. There is no particular medicine for this. But doctors prescribe a combination of medicines,” stated Minister George.
Import of Medicine from Germany
To tackle the issue of limited availability of the necessary medication in India, the Kerala government had sought assistance from the Union Government. In a significant development, the BPS group has successfully procured the medication from Germany. “Today, BPS group have brought the medicine from Germany. Initially, 58 tablets were brought,” Minister George confirmed.
Diagnostic Approach
Minister George explained the diagnostic process being followed by doctors in Kerala. “What’s happening in Kerala is that if cases are reported, the doctors do all the viral tests and if all the viral panels are negative, then they will go for the next thing. Like this, they have detected this disease,” she said, highlighting the thorough approach being taken to diagnose Amebic Meningoencephalitis.
Pioneering Study with ICMR
In a groundbreaking move, Kerala, in cooperation with the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), is set to launch the first-of-its-kind study on Amebic Meningoencephalitis. “With the cooperation of ICMR, we are constituting a team to study this particular disease, Amebic Meningoencephalitis. This will be the first of its kind study in the world. So with ICMR, we are planning that study,” announced Minister George.
This study aims to provide deeper insights into the disease, which could lead to more effective treatment strategies and potentially save lives.
The Kerala government’s proactive steps in addressing Amebic Meningoencephalitis underscore its commitment to public health and innovation in medical research. The outcomes of this initiative could have significant implications not only for Kerala but for global medical science.
