The assassination of two Indian leaders, along with other world leaders, has once again come into prominence following the deadly shooting of former Japanese prime minister Shinzo Abe on Friday during a campaign address in western Japan.
The Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, expressed sympathy on Abe’s passing by saying, “Today, the entire India mourns with Japan and we stand in solidarity with our Japanese brothers and sisters in this sad period.” Abe and India had a particular relationship.
He declared that on July 9, a day of national mourning will be commemorated as a sign of India’s utmost respect.
Friday in Nara, Abe, 67, was fatally shot from behind minutes into his speech. He was taken by helicopter to a hospital for urgent care. He received emergency care, but was subsequently declared dead. At the scene of the attack, which horrified many people in Japan, police apprehended the alleged gunman.
The assassination of then-prime minister Indira Gandhi by two of her security men left India in mourning in 1984. In 1991, Rajiv Gandhi, her son and a former prime minister, was assassinated as well.
On the morning of October 31, 1984, Indira Gandhi, who had gained the nickname “Iron Lady,” was murdered by her security guards after having just left her official residence at 1, Safdarjung Road in Delhi. The structure is now a memorial.

The assassination of the royals in Nepal rocked both the country and the entire world. On June 1, 2001, his son shot and killed King Birendra Bir Bikram Shah Dev and some members of the royal family.
Following the death of his father on January 31, 1972, King Birendra succeeded to the throne and ruled Nepal for three decades, first as an absolute monarch and then, starting in 1990, as a constitutional monarch.
