Assassination of world leaders: From Indira Gandhi to JFK

The assassination of two Indian leaders, along with other world leaders, has once again come into prominence following the deadly shooting of former Japanese prime minister Shinzo Abe on Friday during a campaign address in western Japan.

The Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, expressed sympathy on Abe’s passing by saying, “Today, the entire India mourns with Japan and we stand in solidarity with our Japanese brothers and sisters in this sad period.” Abe and India had a particular relationship.

He declared that on July 9, a day of national mourning will be commemorated as a sign of India’s utmost respect.

Friday in Nara, Abe, 67, was fatally shot from behind minutes into his speech. He was taken by helicopter to a hospital for urgent care. He received emergency care, but was subsequently declared dead. At the scene of the attack, which horrified many people in Japan, police apprehended the alleged gunman.

The assassination of then-prime minister Indira Gandhi by two of her security men left India in mourning in 1984. In 1991, Rajiv Gandhi, her son and a former prime minister, was assassinated as well.

On the morning of October 31, 1984, Indira Gandhi, who had gained the nickname “Iron Lady,” was murdered by her security guards after having just left her official residence at 1, Safdarjung Road in Delhi. The structure is now a memorial.

She was brought to AIIMS, but the first female prime minister of India passed away there. Her life had been an inspiration to women all over the world, and some parents had even given their daughters her name.

Even many seasoned news anchors were shocked by the level of anguish the country was experiencing on that tragic day.

Reading the news of her murder, according to seasoned TV presenter Salma Sultan, may have been the most challenging task of her career.

Rajiv Gandhi, the son of Indira Gandhi who succeeded his mother as prime minister after her death and held the position until 1989, was killed on the evening of May 21, 1991, at an electoral rally in Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu, by a female suicide bomber.

Among other heads of state around the world who have been assassinated, include leaders from Pakistan, Nepal, Sri Lanka and the US.

Lincoln, the 16th US president who led the nation through the American Civil War, was fatally shot by John Wilkes Booth, an American stage actor at Ford’s Theatre in Washington, D.C., on April 14, 1865. The theatre has been preserved as a heritage site.

JFK, or John F. Kennedy, was the 35th president of the United States from 1961 until his murder on November 22, 1963, in Dallas. After being detained for the murder, Lee Harvey Oswald, a former US Marine, was shot and killed by Jack Ruby two days later.

Between 1989 and 1993, Ranasinghe Premadasa served as president of Sri Lanka until his assassination in 1993.

According to the website of Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, a sniper assassinated Serbian Prime Minister Zoran Djindjic in Belgrade on March 12, 2003.

The assassination of the royals in Nepal rocked both the country and the entire world. On June 1, 2001, his son shot and killed King Birendra Bir Bikram Shah Dev and some members of the royal family.

Following the death of his father on January 31, 1972, King Birendra succeeded to the throne and ruled Nepal for three decades, first as an absolute monarch and then, starting in 1990, as a constitutional monarch. King Birendra was instrumental in the founding of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation.
