Bike Care Tips: One of the more frequent issues that owners of motorcycles or scooters may have is a dead battery, particularly if their vehicle has been idle for some time. Using an Optimate trickle charger is a smart approach to combat this issue. If you’re not going to be using your battery for a while, it can help maintain it healthy and fully charged, possibly even extending its life.

The good news is that replacing a dead battery is one of the easiest things to perform if you should find yourself in that situation! In this article, we will tell you how you can replace your motorbike’s battery.

Bike Care Tips: How to change a bike’s battery

Remove the battery

You should take the motorcycle’s battery out first thing on your to-do list. Batteries are usually located beneath the motorcycle seat. Some models might need a key in order to remove the seat and access the components underneath. You might also need to remove a side panel in order to reach the battery, depending on where it is located. Make sure your ignition switch is in the off position before you start.

Once you’ve located it, take off the safety straps protecting the battery and gently pull it out to reveal the cables. First, take the line out of the negative terminal with a wrench.

Clean the connectors

After removing the battery, look over your cable connectors. If there’s any corrosion on them, give them a wire brush cleaning.

Replace the battery

When inserting the new battery, slide it into position and attach the wires to the terminals. First attach the positive side, then the negative side. After using the security belt to keep everything in place, reinstall the motorcycle seat.
