Bike Care Tips: How to clean and lubricate your chain at home, Do Read

Bike Care Tips: Chains on motorcycles get dirty. Whether you’re racing in the woods or on a spotless track, they collect dirt and debris. Before putting new lubricant on your chain, sometimes brushing it down with a rag dampened with cleaner works well for removing surface dirt, but you should deep clean your drive chain after every oil change. In this article, we will tell you how to properly clean and lubricate your bike’s chain.

Bike Care Tips: How to clean and lubricate your chain at home

1. Put it on a stand

To place your motorcycle on its main stand or even the paddock stand, choose a spotless, level surface. To avoid dirtying both the motorcycle and yourself, it’s usually a good idea to start in a clean area. It’s going to get dirty, so don’t forget to clean up after yourself. Make sure that the drainage is adequate because we will be using water.

2. Wash the chain

In nations like ours, where the roads aren’t routinely cleaned, motorcycle chains are especially dirty. The greasy surface and positioning of open chains on motorcycles make them magnets for dust and debris. This is one of the main causes of the enclosed chain covers found on the majority of commuter motorcycles in India. Considering how much these chains are exposed to the weather, they should be cleaned as soon as possible. Water will loosen up the residual sludge on the chain and assist in removing as much of the surface debris as possible.

3. Clean the chain

WD-40 multi-use product spray, which is available at most hardware stores, or a chain cleaner should be sprayed on it first for a thorough cleaning. To get the spray on every chain link, make sure the wheel is rotating while you spray. After letting it sit for a few minutes, use the toothbrush or chain cleaning brush to clean the teeth. Give the brush a thorough scrub and sometimes clean it. Last but not least, use a rag to thoroughly clean the chain, ensuring that the original beautiful metallic hue has returned.

4. Lubricate the chain

Applying motorcycle chain lube to the chain is the final and most satisfying procedure. Make sure to oil every chain link by using the nozzle that comes with the spray can. Spray in brief spurts to avoid getting all over other locations that would be tough to wipe up afterwards. Take extra care not to over lube, and take extra care not to get any on the back tyre. To control overspray, it’s a good idea to place a piece of cardboard behind the chain.
