Bike Care Tips: The process of starting the engine of a vehicle by physically pushing the car forward and engaging the gearbox is known as push-starting or bump-starting. When your motorcycle battery dies or the engine refuses to start, knowing how to push start a motorbike is a helpful skill to have. In this article, we will tell you how to do it.
Bike Care Tips: How to push start a bike?
Put the bike in the first or the second gear
Push-starting requires the bike to be in a reasonably low gear. Push-starting a bike is typically simplest in second gear, though it can usually be done in first as well. In some bikes will even start more easily in first gear than in second.
Hold the clutch in and begin pushing
Getting the bike to roll downhill will help you easily reach push-starting speed. You would ride the bike in this situation as opposed to sprinting alongside it and pushing. Watch out that you don’t lose control of the bike when doing a push-start downhill.
Release the clutch and hit the starter
When the bike is moving and you’ve gained sufficient speed, smoothly release the clutch and press the starter button at the same time. Apply a reasonable amount of throttle to the bike. Re-engage the clutch as soon as the bike starts to keep it from escaping your control.
Rev the engine
You don’t want your bike to die again now that it’s started. To prevent your bike from choking or dying, rev the engine at a medium level while pressing the clutch.
Ride away
Unless you intentionally switch it off or stall the engine, your motorbike is unlikely to stop again once you get it started. You can avoid future push-starts by riding your bike and/or revving your engine if your battery is completely dead.
