Licence to import devices: The government today postponed by three months the intention to restrict laptop and tablet imports, providing respite to electronic industries. Companies will have until October 31 to obtain a permission to import the devices, according to a government announcement.
“Import consignments can be cleared without a licence until October 31, and a government permit will be required for import clearance beginning November 1,” the government said.
Postponed the restrictions
A “liberal transitional arrangement is provided for the import of laptops, tablets, all-in-one personal computers, ultra-small form factor computers, and servers… until October 31, 2023,” it added. This is a partial reversal of a surprise decision to apply the licencing requirement with immediate effect on Thursday, which sparked appeals for a postponement.
Why the companies have to take Licence to import devices?
According to the government, the limits were established for security concerns as well as to stimulate indigenous manufacture. According to officials, the action will also reduce inbound shipments of these goods from countries such as China and Korea, as well as allow the Centre to keep a close eye on the places from which the products are coming.
To reduce dependence on imports
Union Information Technology Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar stated that the action was intended to “ensure trusted hardware and systems” and reduce reliance on imports.
The revelation took the sector off guard, pushing IT titans to begin emergency discussions with the government about how to fast secure licences at a time when consumer demand is high, with the Diwali shopping season just around the corner.
