AR Rahman: In the past several hours, AR Rahman has come under backlash for the mismanagement of his ‘Marakuma Nenjam’ concert. In a recent interview, Rahman issued an apology, stating that he felt deeply disturbed by the situation. He emphasised his reluctance to point fingers at anyone and expressed his commitment to holding himself accountable.
Crowd mismanagement left fans upset
The music maestro also hinted at an upcoming surprise, which he plans to unveil once his team gathers the necessary data. The ‘Marakuma Nenjam’ concert by AR Rahman faced criticism due to crowd control issues attributed to ACTC Events, the event management company. The company’s vague and generic apology further frustrated fans.
Numerous attendees complained about the low volume, making it nearly inaudible for those at a distance from the stage. Many shared distressing accounts of panic attacks and anxiety caused by the overcrowding. Additionally, reports emerged of ticket holders being denied entry to the venue. Many also said that no special security or place was made even for people with VIP tickets along with the parking issue as well.
What did AR Rahman say?
Speaking to the media, “It was a tsunami of people and love that we were unable to handle. As a composer, my job was to give a terrific show, and I thought everything else would be taken care of. I was just thinking that it shouldn’t rain, and was happily performing inside, without any idea of what was happening outside. Our intentions were good, but I think the response was beyond our expectations. We are collecting the data now, and we will surprise fans with something soon.”
Continuing further, he said, “Right now, we are just terribly disturbed. Safety was the primary issue, especially because there were women and kids. I don’t want to point fingers at anyone, but we have to realise that the city is expanding, and the passion to consume music and art is also expanding.”
Speaking on what happened in the event, AR Rahman said, “The organisers (ACTC events) had put together about 46,000 chairs in the venue. In some sections, everybody sat on one side and didn’t move to the other side. Seeing this, the policemen on duty assumed that the venue was full and closed it. By this time, the show had already started inside.’
