Suchetana Bhattacharya: Daughter of former chief minister of Bengal Buddhadeb Bhattacharya, Suchetana Bhattacharya, has chosen to get gender reassignment surgery and change her name to Suchetan. She further stated that she had always identified as a transman intellectually and now desired to be the same physically. She added that although she and her father had discussed this when she was a young child, she is the one who has decided what to do now.
Embracing Transman Identity and Advocating for Understanding
She told ABP Live Bangla that she “has been a transman mentally and now wants to be so physically.” “I too want to alter my name, and I’ve looked into the legal aspects. I began thinking identifying as a transman as I got older, and as a result, I experience a lot of humiliation. That is the rationale behind my choice, she continued. She also pleaded with the public to avoid confusing her familial identity with her own. She explained her choice, saying, “Better late than never. I’ve always been open with my father about the fact that I identify as a transman. This July 1, I will turn 42. My father and I have always been progressive, therefore this is my choice. People who don’t understand the term too well should know that this has nothing to do with communism, she continued. A image of Suchetana speaking at a symposium on the livelihood of the community was posted on social media by LGBTQ activist Suprava Roy, who initially brought attention to the issue. According to Roy, Suchetana identified as a “transman” at the symposium and stated that “he” would go by the name “Suchetan” following the sex-change procedure.

Celebrating the Impact of Suchetana Bhattacharya’s Bravery on the Transgender Rights Movement
Ushashie Chakrabiorty, an actress and rights advocate who spoke at the symposium, told IANS that it is difficult for someone like Suchetana, whose father served as the state’s former chief minister, to come out so bravely and make such an announcement. “I believe Suchetana’s courageous action will inspire many people to speak up and express their emotions. Opening up causes fear in many people. The social movement on this topic will grow stronger as more individuals speak up. People like Suchetana will undoubtedly make significant contributions to society, according to Chakrabiorty, who spoke to IANS. “The goal is to establish both freedom of expression and freedom of choice. People who underwent sex reassignment surgery have done so in the past. They should be commended for their efforts in getting others to come out of the closet. But it has a stronger influence on society when someone with a respectable background speaks out on such a topic,” Gupta remarked.
