In India, the amount of alcohol that may be lawfully kept at home varies depending on the state. Therefore to help you keep within the law, let’s examine these boundaries.
Alcohol Possession Limits by State
Haryana
- 6 bottles of local liquor (750 ml each)
- 18 bottles of Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL) (750 ml each)
- Not more than 6 bottles of imported foreign liquor
- 12 bottles of beer (650 ml each)
- 6 bottles of rum (750 ml each)
- 6 bottles of vodka/cider/gin (750 ml each)
- 12 bottles of wine
Punjab
- 1.5 liters of foreign alcoholic beverages (both Indian made and imported)
- 2 liters of wine
- 6 liters of beer
Delhi
- Up to 18 liters of alcohol (includes both beer and wine)
- Up to 9 liters of rum, whiskey, vodka, or gin
- Only 1 liter of alcohol can be taken out of Delhi
Uttar Pradesh
- 1.5 liters of foreign alcoholic beverages (both Indian made and imported)
- 2 liters of wine
- 6 liters of beer
Arunachal Pradesh
- Without a valid liquor license, possession of more than 18 liters of IMFL or country liquor is prohibited
West Bengal
- 6 bottles (750 ml each) of Indian Made Foreign Liquor for those above 21 years of age
- Up to 18 beer bottles
Assam
- 12 bottles of IMFL per day
- 4.5 liters of rectified or denatured spirit
- 3 bottles (750 ml each) per person per day
Goa
- 12 IMFL bottles
- 24 beer bottles
- 18 country liquor bottles
- 6 bottles of rectified and denatured spirit
Andhra Pradesh
- Up to three bottles of IMFL or foreign liquor
- Six bottles of beer without a permit
Himachal Pradesh
- 48 beer bottles
- 36 whiskey bottles
Kerala
- 3 liters of IMFL
- 6 liters of beer
Madhya Pradesh
- High-income individuals can keep up to 100 “expensive” liquor bottles
Maharashtra
- A license is required for drinking alcohol
- Permit needed for purchase, transportation, and consumption of both domestic and imported alcoholic beverages
Rajasthan
- Up to 12 bottles (or nine liters) of IMFL
Jammu and Kashmir
- 12 bottles of IMFL (including 750 ml JK Desi whisky)
- 12 beer bottles (650 ml each)
Dry States
- Mizoram, Gujarat, Bihar, Nagaland, and Lakshadweep have complete alcohol bans. Violating these laws can lead to severe consequences.
