After setting up Ganpati idol on Ganesh Chaturthi, Ganpati Bappa is given farewell on Anant Chaturdashi. This year Ganesh Visarjan is on 19th September. On this day, the idol of Lord Ganesha is floated in water with great pomp. Ganesh Janmotsav is celebrated with gaiety for ten days.
Worship before immersion
Before the immersion of the idol of Lord Ganesha, worship is done with full rituals. After this, modak and fruits are offered. After the aarti of Ganapati, farewell prayer is recited. A red cloth is spread on a wooden plank and Ganesh ji is kept after sprinkling Ganga water. Along with this, fruits, flowers, modaks and clothes are kept on it. Then prepare a bundle of rice, wheat and Panchmeva and put some coins on the plank. This bundle is kept with Ganesh ji. After this, Bappa is taken for immersion. Before the immersion, once again aarti of Lord Ganesha is performed and devotees wish to come early next year. Then Bappa is immersed in the flowing water.
Why is immersion done?
One often wonders why Ganesh Visarjan is performed on the occasion of Anant Chaturdashi. It is believed that the ritual of immersion of idols is to remind us of the reality that one who is born on earth must have an end.
