Senior citizens have persistently sought ticket fare concessions in trains, akin to the pre-COVID era. Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav’s recent response has sparked discussions, highlighting a 55 percent discount for all passengers. This update unfolded during Vaishnav’s visit to Ahmedabad, where he assessed the progress of the Bullet Train project.
Revisiting Pre-COVID Concessions
Before the nationwide COVID-19 lockdown in March 2020, Indian Railways provided a 50 percent discount on train fares for senior citizens and government-accredited journalists. Despite the complete halt in railway operations during the lockdown, the concessions were not reinstated when services resumed in June 2022, sparking ongoing discussions.
Railway Minister’s Response
Minister Vaishnav, addressing queries on restoring concessions, emphasized the existing 55 percent discount for every train passenger. However, the fate of specific concessions for senior citizens and media persons remains uncertain.
