H-1B visa problems to ease, according to sources

H-1B visa: According to Reuters, the US State Department is set to ease H-1B visa bottlenecks for a small number of Indians. An announcement to this effect could be made as early as Thursday, say sources familiar with the development.

Indian PM Narendra Modi is in the United States this week and is due to meet President Biden and other key officials on Thursday. Both countries have emphasized that relations between the US and India are deeper and stronger.

The State Department declined to comment on this matter.

Every year, many H-1B visa holders have to travel to India for visa renewal. A source says the US Department would be starting a pilot programme that will allow some of these visa holders to renew their visas within the US. However, this source declined to explain what “some’ means.

India is a favourite for H-1B visas

The US State Department issues nearly 65,000 H-1B visas every year, with 42,000 being given to qualified Indian citizens. These workers are employed in the US offices of companies like TCS, Cognizant, Amazon and Meta.

Every H-1B visa has a validity of 3 years and once it expires, the holder gets a grace period of 60 days to remain within the United States. H1-B visa holders can get their visas renewed for another 3 years.

A spokesperson for the US State Department said, “The ability for some of the temporary foreign workers to renew visas in the U.S. would free up resources for visa interviews in consulates abroad.”

Critical issue in India-US relationship

Many spouses separated from their partners working in the US have taken to social media complaining about how hard it is to get visas.

The Biden Administration says it wants to remove visa bottlenecks for Indians to have a better relationship with New Delhi.
