The Indian Railways has introduced a range of facilities and concessions to enhance the comfort and affordability of journeys for those aged 58 and above. From automatic allocation of lower berths to increased quotas, here’s how the railway experience is now more senior-friendly.
Confirmed Lower Berths for a Stress-Free Journey
No more scrambling for comfortable berths! Senior citizens, along with women above 45 and pregnant women, are now automatically allocated lower berths in trains. This means more convenience and less fatigue, especially for those with mobility limitations.
Additional Lower Berth Quotas for Enhanced Comfort
The Railways has increased the quota of lower berths reserved for senior citizens and vulnerable groups. In the sleeper class, six berths are dedicated to them, while 3AC and 2AC coaches offer four to five and three to four lower berths, respectively.
Flexibility with Upper Berths
Even if you’re initially assigned an upper berth, worry not! If a lower berth becomes vacant during your journey, onboard staff will prioritize shifting you to a more comfortable position. This ensures a relaxing and enjoyable experience for all passengers.
Railway Minister’s statement on subsidies
The central government clarified that senior citizens may not receive subsidies on railway fares. The Railway Minister reiterated the government’s position, stating that all railway passengers receive a 55% discount on rental charges. If the cost of a train ticket on a particular route is 100 rupees, the railway is only charging 45 rupees, providing a 55 rupee discount to every passenger on a 100 rupee ticket.
Railway used to offer discounts on train fares for senior citizens. Men aged 60 and above enjoyed a 40% concession, while women aged 58 and above received a well-deserved 50% discount. These concessions applied to all Mail, Express, Rajdhani, and other train categories.
