Inspirational Stories: For the Khachakad family, the Fourth of July was just another day. Then, out of nowhere, a call startled everyone to consciousness. MPSC PSI (Maharashtra Public Service Commission — Police Sub-Inspector) exam results had already been made public. After taking a deep breath, Sunil Khachakad visited the website to view the MPSC result merit list. The name “Khachakad Sunil Bhagwan” was prominently displayed. The 28-year-old had achieved exam success. Sunil claims to be “speechless” in an interview with The Better India.

Sunil’s Journey from a Challenging Childhood to Aspiring Sub-Inspector

“I have no words to describe that moment. All of us were hugging each other and crying. I never imagined that I would get the first rank,” he shares. This outcome was a credit to Sunil’s and his family’s seven years of diligent labour. Sunil was raised in Washim, Maharashtra‘s Ranjit Nagar village. He was the second of five children and had a difficult childhood. To assure a bright future for the kids, their parents would work on the farm all day. “I grew up seeing everyone in my village struggling. We were always in a hand-to-mouth situation. I didn’t have any interest in farming and saw how difficult it was. When we headed out, I always found the policemen fascinating. The way they walked and talked, their energy was different. I wanted to be like them ever since I was a child. And I thought it would also help improve our social status,” he says. But until he received his diploma, Sunil continued to work on the farm and perform odd jobs for his family. He relocated to Aurangabad’s Sambhaji Nagar in 2016 to pursue his aim of becoming a sub-inspector. One of the centres for MPSC training was Sambhaji Nagar, but Sunil couldn’t afford the courses. He consequently studied with his pals rather.

Sunil’s Determination and Perseverance on the Path to Success

For this aspiring police officer, the going was rough. Two other candidates received the same marks as him when he first passed the written exam in 2018. They were chosen because the other candidates were older. “Because the others were older than me, I only lost by a single mark. Then, in 2019, I came in fourth,” claims Sunil. Sunil had to wait longer when the MPSC 2020 examinations were eventually postponed because to COVID. In 2020, Sunil wed Urmila, an Osmanabad police officer. In June 2023, a baby girl was born to them. As my exams were postponed, Urmila helped to support our family. Additionally, COVID significantly reduced our already meagre revenue. Despite this, she helped me concentrate on my tests, he says. He used books and free YouTube classes to study for the examinations because he didn’t have the money to pay for classes. “My friends gave me their books. They also told me which ones to refer and I only studied from those books. I would watch YouTube videos by experts to clear my doubts. I feel studying the same books for seven years helped me get the first rank,” says the topper, who finally cleared the exam on his fourth attempt in 2023. “I’m proud of Sunil. He is proof of the power of hard work. It’s only upwards from here for us,” says Urmila.
