Inspirational Stories: Kochouseph Chittilappilly, 72, is a legendary figure in his own right. Failing at ISRO, Succeeding in Business

Kochouseph, a Thrissur native who studied for a master’s degree in physics, aspired to work with ISRO as a scientist after graduation. He had not even considered starting his own business. He nonetheless never received a selection, despite applying to the Indian space agency. The failure in his career could be considered as a stepping stone towards his success given the empire he built. He then started his profession with small businesses that were having financial difficulties. Chittilappilly established his first business in 1977 with a loan under the name V-Guard Industries. A business with only two employees eventually became India’s top stabiliser brand. Around 2000, the company started to diversify and opened Kerala’s first theme park before expanding into Karnataka. With the Wonderla brand, the new business became his next major success. The market capitalization of V-Guard is currently Rs 12,485 crore, whereas that of Wonderla is Rs 3,555 crore. The net worth of Chittilappilly exceeds Rs 9,938 crore.

Kochouseph Chittilappilly’s Unprecedented Kidney Donation and Charitable Legacy

He was a generous businessman who broke a record at age 61 by being the first billionaire to donate a kidney. He also donated his priceless organ to a destitute truck driver who was an absolute stranger. Additionally, he is a philanthropist who has used his K Chittilappilly Foundation to support a number of causes. This includes building 1000 homeless families homes. Additionally, he is a successful businessman who was given the Rashtriya Samman award for being among India’s highest taxpayers.
