Inspirational Stories: The phrase “one incident can change the course of one’s life forever” is used frequently. The same was true for Indian billionaire Mahesh Gupta, who created a multi-billion dollar company because his son had ‘Jaundice’ caused by waterborne bacteria. A mechanical engineer by training, Mahesh Gupta entered the Indian water purification industry and revolutionised it. India’s leading manufacturer of water purifiers, Kent RO Systems Ltd., was founded and is headed by Dr. Mahesh Gupta.

The Foundation of Dr. Mahesh Gupta’s Entrepreneurial Journey

In 1975, Mahesh Gupta graduated from IIT Kanpur with a degree in mechanical engineering. He eventually earned a master’s degree in engineering from the Indian Institute of Petroleum (IIP) in Dehradun. Dr. Mahesh Gupta began working with Indian Oil Limited in 1977, shortly after receiving his degree, and remained there till 1988. The same year, Dr. Mahesh Gupta’s life was drastically altered by the jaundice of his kid. Dr. Mahesh Gupta knew that jaundice is a waterborne disease, therefore he looked into every water filter available in India but was unable to locate anything that fit his requirements. Due of his technical training at the time, Dr. Mahesh Gupta chose to build a water filer himself.

From a Modest Rs 20000 to Pioneering Water Purification

With just Rs. 20,000, Dr. Mahesh Gupta began his business venture in a small room at home. Through his career at Indian Oil Corporation Limited, he had saved considerable cash. With just Rs 20,000, Dr. Mahesh Gupta launched his company in 1988 and unveiled the “Kent RO System,” the first domestic RO water filter. The process employed in this system to filter the water is reverse osmosis. His initial team was made up of four individuals, with a Rs. 1 lakh investment. Today, Kent RO System Limited employs more than 3,000 people and generates more than Rs 600 crore in annual income. It has gained 45p in market share for RO minerals. Given its humble beginnings, Kent RO has grown into one of India’s most cutting-edge manufacturers of water purifiers.
