Despite being raised in a middle-class home and having to overcome various difficulties, he shown exceptional academic ability when he was young. After earning his electrical engineering bachelor’s degree from the University of Mysore, Narayana Murthy continued on to the famed Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur, for his master’s degree. Narayana Murthy’s Shift from Marxism to Entrepreneurship

Murthy had strong Marxist ideals in his formative years, but during a train ride in 1974, everything changed. Narayan struck up a discussion with a girl who could only speak French on the train as they travelled through Nis, a town that is situated on the border of Serbia and Bulgaria. But the boy who was with her was upset, and he called the police. Murthy was detained by Bulgarian police, who also hauled him onto the platform and took his baggage and passport. In what he describes as an 8X8 cell with basic bathroom facilities, Murthy spent the following 72 hours. In these conditions, one would at least anticipate courteous treatment, but Murthy was also refused food or drink for the entire period of 72 hours. When he was eventually freed, the guards reportedly said, “Look, you are from a friendly country called India, so we are letting you go, but we will give you your passport when you reach Istanbul.” Murthy recalled this. Murthy questioned whether he would ever want to be a part of a communist country if it treated its friends in such a way. Murthy went from being a confused leftist to a committed caring capitalist as a result of the entire experience. This strengthened his motivation to launch his own business.
