Ravi Pillai’s Journey from Poverty to Building a Billion-Dollar Empire
Pillai, who was raised in poverty as the son of a farmer, rose to the top by sheer willpower and built the multi-billion dollar RP Group empire.
With the construction heavyweight, which generates income of $7.8 billion (more than Rs 64,000 crore), he amassed money and reputation. He later gained ground in industries like high-end hotels, steel, gas, oil, cement, and shopping centres. Pillai was born into a poor farming family and is a native of the hamlet of Kollam in the coastal town of Kerala. However, Pillai’s schooling was unaffected, and he graduated from Kochi University with a postgraduate degree in business administration. He launched a chit-fund business, got a loan to get going, and afterwards established an unsuccessful construction company in India. Pillai persisted and made the decision to travel to Saudi Arabia in 1978. He eventually achieved success and assembled a 150-person construction enterprise. Today, his staff has increased to almost 70,000, which is a good illustration of a stratospheric rise. Along with managing a number of five-star hotels, Pillai also owns The Raviz Ashtamudi, The Raviz Kovalam, and The Raviz Kadavu. He has a number of residences spread over the globe. These include a penthouse in Pune’s Trump Tower. He owns a 300-bed multispecialty hospital in Kollam, RP Mall, and interests in real estate and banks.

He is also regarded as having hosted his daughter’s wedding at an estimated cost of Rs 55 crore, making it the most expensive in Kerala. Top worldwide CEOs and members of the royal family attended the event. 30,000 persons were on the guest list. Production designer for the blockbuster film Baahubali organised it. The Mercedes-Maybach S600 and S500, the Rolls-Royce Ghost, the Land Rover Range Rover Autobiography, the BMW 5-Series 520d, and the Audi A6 Matrix are among the high-end vehicles Pillai supposedly owns. According to the Forbes real-time net worth list, he is currently worth over Rs 25,000 crore ($3.1 billion).
