Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) has made an exciting decision to open a Centre for Hindu Studies in addition to centres for Buddhist and Jain studies. An official announcement states that the School of Sanskrit and Indic Studies would house these new centres.
A Step Forward in Indic Studies
The approval for these centres was granted by the JNU Executive Council at a meeting held on May 29. This choice is in line with the suggestions made by a committee that was formed to explore and put the university’s Indian Knowledge System and National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 into practice.
“The Executive Council, in its meeting on 29.05.2024, approved the committee’s recommendations to implement NEP-2020 and the Indian Knowledge System. This includes the establishment of new centres under the School of Sanskrit and Indic Studies,” stated the notification dated July 9.
Expanding Educational Horizons
JNU’s initiative aligns with similar steps taken by other prominent institutions. Last year, Delhi University (DU) launched a Centre for Hindu Studies offering a master’s degree. DU already has a Department for Buddhist Studies and received approval in March to set up a Centre for Advanced Studies in Buddhism, backed by an investment of Rs 35 crore.
Embracing the NEP 2020 Vision
The establishment of these centres reflects JNU’s commitment to embracing the NEP 2020 and integrating traditional Indian knowledge systems into higher education. The new centres aim to foster a deeper understanding and appreciation of Hindu, Buddhist, and Jain philosophies, contributing to a richer educational landscape.
